A letter from our founder
My name is Keiko Sawumi and I make Sawumi. Before you buy another soap for itchy, sweaty skin, from us or anyone else, let me show you what I check. Very little of what reaches a bathroom outside Japan is the kind of bar I grew up with.

A few years ago I flew home to Japan to see my mother. It was the middle of a humid summer, and within a day of being back in the house, I noticed it.
She kept her socks on indoors, even in the heat. She scratched her feet under the table when she thought nobody was looking, and she kept tugging at her blouse where it sat under her chest. When her shoes came off in the hallway, there was a sour smell she hurried to hide.
So I said nothing. Not out of kindness. I just could not find a way to raise it that would not embarrass her, and I felt terrible the whole time.

She was eighty-seven, lived twenty minutes away, and came from the generation that simply says things. I told her, mostly because it had been sitting on me all week.
She was not surprised at all. She used the ordinary word for it: mizumushi (水虫), "water bug". In Japan every summer brings it, and everybody knows what warm, damp skin does to feet and folds.
Then she went into her bathroom and came back with a bar of soap.
"Leave it in her bathroom," she said. "Don't say anything. She'll know."

And I stood there holding it, and realised I had been looking at that soap my entire childhood.
Plain, a little rough, speckled with herbs. I must have walked past it ten thousand times and never once wondered what it was for.
It was a clay soap with herbs worked into it, the kind the old bathhouses in Wakayama kept by the basins for feet and for the folds of skin that stay damp all day. Wash, rinse, dry properly. Nobody there would call it a product.
I did exactly what she said. I left the bar in my mother's bathroom, said nothing, and flew back to Seattle.
She has used it every day since. She has never mentioned why. Neither have I.

A few months later, a friend here brought it up with me, awkwardly, half apologising. Itchy feet that would not settle, and a red, sweaty fold under her chest every summer. She had no idea who to ask, or even what to call it.
I knew exactly where she was standing. I had watched my mother stand there that summer.
I still had two bars in my suitcase. I gave her one and repeated my grandmother's words. Wash with it every day. Dry properly. Don't say anything.
She told somebody. Soon people I had never met were asking me for it. And when I went looking to buy more here, I found out two things.

Nobody talks about it. Most decide it is a hygiene failure, and shower two and three times a day, scrubbing harder with perfumed gel, which only leaves already itchy skin raw and tight.
The second is that the bar I wanted to hand them is not sold here. Not really. A bar made with real actives at a stated strength and a bar with a drop of tea tree for the smell can print the same words, in the same size type, on the front of the box. Both are perfectly legal.

When a cheap bar does nothing, you do not conclude the bar was cheap. You conclude nothing will ever help.
That is what bothers me. People who tried one, got a perfumed green bar, felt nothing after three weeks, and quietly went back to keeping their socks on.
So I went back to Japan and made it properly, for the way we live now. Sawumi is made with tea tree oil at 2% and piroctone olamine at 0.5%, the ingredient trusted in anti-dandruff shampoos, with bentonite clay that draws out sweat and buildup, and sage leaf, the way the old bathhouse bars had herbs in them.
It is made in small batches because it has to be. We pour it by hand, and once a run sells through, the next one is weeks away. I would rather say so plainly.

Here are the six things I check instead. Most take under a minute. One takes ten seconds. Run them on our bar as happily as on anyone else's. That is the point.

The ten-second one. It settles more cases than the other five combined.
Sawumi is sold in exactly one place: our own store. No marketplaces, no resellers, no third-party sellers. If your bar came from anywhere else, it is not our soap, however close the wrapper looks.
Open your order confirmation and read the seller line, not the product title. The title is the easiest thing in the world to copy.
If it came from anywhere but our store, you can stop here.

Everything that matters is printed in the smallest type on the box.
Turn the box over. You are looking for named actives: tea tree oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil) and piroctone olamine. If it says "herbal blend", "fragrance" or "parfum", or there is no list at all, you have your answer.
If they are there, you are only halfway. The next question is the one almost nobody asks.
How much of them is in there?
Real actives at a real strength cost money. So a common move is to add a token amount, name it truthfully on the panel, and let the label do the work. Everything on the box is accurate. The bar still does very little.
So ask. A brand with a real amount in the bar will give you the number straight away. The ones that change the subject have answered you.
Ours is named on the panel, and here are the numbers: tea tree oil 2%, piroctone olamine 0.5%, which is within the EU limit for rinse-off products, with bentonite clay and sage leaf, in a cold-process base of olive, coconut, shea and castor oils. That base is there because itchy, sweaty skin does not need stripping. That is why so many harsh bars leave people tighter and itchier than before.

Left: SAWUMI, pressed into the soap itself. Right: nothing at all. Same words on both boxes.
My favourite. Four seconds, and you cannot argue with the result.
Take the bar out of the box and look at it.
The real one says SAWUMI on the bar. Not only on the box, not on a sticker or a sleeve, but pressed into the soap. If your bar has no name on it, it is not ours, however close the box looks.
It matters because of what is inside. Ours is made with really good ingredients: tea tree oil and piroctone olamine at stated amounts, bentonite clay, sage leaf and a proper base of olive, coconut, shea and castor oils.
The cheap copies are a different thing. The ones you can buy on Amazon, and the ones in the Meta ads cloning us, are built to look like our bar rather than work like it.
So do not judge the colour. Judge the name. No SAWUMI on the bar, no Sawumi in your hand.

Perfume has to come from somewhere. Usually it is there to cover for what is missing.
Hold the dry bar to your nose.
If it smells sweet, flowery or "fresh" like a shower gel, that is added fragrance. The scent is there because the box promises something and the bar has to deliver something.
That fragrance then sits on skin that is already itchy and warm, twice a day. If your skin reacts easily, as so much skin in the folds does, that is worth knowing.
And perfume does nothing about the sour smell from damp feet and folds. It sits on top of it for an hour or two, and then the smell is back. Ours has no added perfume, only the light natural note of the tea tree oil.
A bar should leave you fresh, not perfumed.

Thirty seconds, and it changes what you thought you paid.
Nobody thinks to do this one.
Listings advertise the number of bars, not their size. Many come in well under what you would assume. That is how a "three-pack" ends up costing more per wash than one full bar, and why so many reviews say it was half gone after a week.
Sawumi is 100 g. Weigh yours. If it is much lighter, work out the price per gram, and the bargain usually disappears.

No bar needed for this one.
Real actives at a stated strength, poured by hand in small batches in Japan, then cured before they ship. It is not a cheap way to make soap, and there is only so much of it in each run.
Now picture two bars for ten dollars, in stock all year, in unlimited quantity.
Something has to give, and it is always the actives. They get swapped for a trace of tea tree, green colouring and a fragrance oil that smells the way people expect a "clean" soap to smell.
If the price seems impossible for what the label promises, that is because it is. You are not being offered a bargain on the same thing. You are being offered a different thing.

Not the ten dollars.
It costs you another summer, and the belief that anything works.
You use it faithfully. Nothing changes, because a trace of tea tree in a perfumed bar was never going to change anything. Around week four you stop, and file it next to the powders and sprays that did not work either.
Then you go back to keeping your socks on, and pulling away before anyone gets close.
That is the real damage. I would genuinely rather you ran these checks on someone else's bar and it passed, than have you give up on feeling comfortable in your own skin because of a bar that was never made properly.

People ask why we are not on the marketplaces. Next to forty near-identical green bars, the only thing anyone can compare is price. We would lose that fight on purpose, because our ingredients cost what they cost.
So the arrangement is simple. One store, and these are the terms:

Itch and sweat are easy to live with quietly. You get used to them, so you are the last person to notice how much of your day they take up. That is also why it is so easy to sell a useless bar into this category.
So give it two weeks. Use it every day on your feet and folds, and dry properly afterwards, between the toes and under the chest. Then notice how your skin feels, and whether you still reach for the socks. Mine did, and she never said a word.
And whatever you decide about us, before you buy this kind of soap from anyone, run check number three. Take the bar out of the box. If it does not say SAWUMI on the bar, it is not the real one.
