A letter from our founder
My name is Keiko Sawumi and I make Sawumi. Before you buy another persimmon bar, from us or anyone else, let me show you what I check. Very little of what reaches a bathroom outside Japan is the bar I grew up with.

A few years ago I flew home to Japan to see my mother. Within a day of being back in the house, I noticed it.
That smell. Not unclean. My mother showers every day of her life. She irons things that do not need ironing. It was something else, something I recognised but could not name.
So I said nothing. Not out of kindness. I just could not find a way to raise it that would not hurt her, and I felt terrible the whole time.

She was eighty-seven, lived twenty minutes away, and came from the generation that simply says things. I told her, mostly because it had been sitting on me all week.
She was not surprised at all. She used the ordinary word for it: karēshū (加齢臭), "aging smell". In Japan this has a name, and everybody past a certain age knows it.
Then she went into her bathroom and came back with a bar of soap.
"Leave it in her bathroom," she said. "Don't say anything. She'll know."

And I stood there holding it, and realised I had been looking at that soap my entire childhood.
Dark, a little austere. I must have walked past it ten thousand times and never once wondered what it was for.
It is called kakishibu (柿渋), fermented persimmon tannin. Unripe persimmons are pressed and left to ferment for months, until you have a dark, nearly black liquid. In Wakayama, where my grandmother made it, it has been used for generations on paper, wood and skin. Nobody there would call it a product.
I did exactly what she said. I left the bar in my mother's bathroom, said nothing, and flew back to Seattle.
She has used it every day since. She has never mentioned why. Neither have I.

A few months later, a friend here brought it up with me, awkwardly, half apologising. She had noticed it on her own mother. She had no idea how to raise it, or even what it was.
I knew exactly where she was standing. I had stood there myself that spring.
I still had two bars in my suitcase. I gave her one and repeated my grandmother's words. Leave it in the bathroom. Don't say anything. She'll know.
It worked. She told somebody. Soon women I had never met were asking me for it. And when I went looking to buy more here, I found out two things.

Nobody told them. Most decided it was a hygiene failure, and were showering two and three times a day to scrub off something that is not on the surface of the skin at all.
The second is that the bar I wanted to hand them is not sold here. Not really. A bar made with real fermented persimmon and a bar made with juice and orange dye can print the same two words, in the same size type, on the front of the box. Both are perfectly legal.

When a cheap bar does nothing, you do not conclude the bar was cheap. You conclude persimmon soap does not work.
That is what bothers me. Women who tried it, got a dyed fruit-scented bar, felt nothing after three weeks, and quietly gave up on the one thing that would have helped.
So I went back to Japan and started making it properly, from my grandmother's recipe. Sawumi is made with real fermented persimmon tannin, the kakishibu she used in Wakayama, not a trace dropped in so the word can go on the box.
It is made in small batches because it has to be. Astringent persimmons are harvested once a year, and there is only as much tannin as the harvest gives. That is also why some batches sell out, and I would rather say so plainly.

Here are the six things I check instead. Most take under a minute. One takes ten seconds. Run them on our bar as happily as on anyone else's. That is the point.

The ten-second one. It settles more cases than the other five combined.
Sawumi is sold in exactly one place: our own store. No marketplaces, no resellers, no third-party sellers. If your bar came from anywhere else, it is not our soap, however close the wrapper looks.
Open your order confirmation and read the seller line, not the product title. The title is the easiest thing in the world to copy.
If it came from anywhere but our store, you can stop here.

Everything that matters is printed in the smallest type on the box.
Turn the box over. You are looking for kakishibu, or fermented persimmon tannin. If it says "persimmon fruit extract", "fragrance" or "parfum", or there is no list at all, you have your answer.
If it is there, you are only halfway. The next question is the one almost nobody asks.
How much of it is in there?
Real kakishibu is expensive: one harvest a year, pressed unripe, fermented for months. So a common move is to add a token amount, name it truthfully on the panel, and let the label do the work. Everything on the box is accurate. The bar still does nothing.
So ask. A brand with a real amount in the bar will give you the number straight away. The ones that change the subject have answered you.
Ours is named on the panel, and here is the number: 2.5% fermented kakishibu, with 1% green tea extract, in a base of olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter and glycerin. That base is there because tannin is astringent, and without it a persimmon bar dries you out. That is why so many cheap ones leave people itching.

Left: SAWUMI, pressed into the soap itself. Right: nothing at all. Same two words on both boxes.
My favourite. Four seconds, and you cannot argue with the result.
Take the bar out of the box and look at it.
The real one says SAWUMI on the bar. Not only on the box, not on a sticker or a sleeve, but pressed into the soap. If your bar has no name on it, it is not ours, however close the box looks.
It matters because of what is inside. Ours is made with really good ingredients: real fermented persimmon tannin, green tea extract and a proper base of olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter and glycerin.
The cheap copies are a different thing. The ones you can buy on Amazon, and the ones in the Meta ads cloning us, are built to look like persimmon soap rather than work like it.
So do not judge the colour. Judge the name. No SAWUMI on the bar, no Sawumi in your hand.

Perfume has to come from somewhere. Usually it is there to cover for what is missing.
Hold the dry bar to your nose.
If it smells sweet and fruity, like persimmon candy, that is added fragrance. Real fermented persimmon tannin does not smell like the fruit. The scent is added because the box promises persimmon and the bar has to deliver something.
That fragrance is also sitting on your skin twice a day. If your skin has become more reactive since menopause, as it has for a great many women, that is worth knowing.
And perfume does nothing about the smell you are trying to get rid of. It sits on top of it, fades by lunchtime, and the smell is still there. Ours has no added perfume. It lifts the odour off instead of covering it.
A bar should take a smell away, not add one.

Thirty seconds, and it changes what you thought you paid.
Nobody thinks to do this one.
Listings advertise the number of bars, not their size. Many come in well under what you would assume. That is how a "three-pack" ends up costing more per wash than one full bar, and why so many reviews say it was half gone after two showers.
Sawumi is 100 g. Weigh yours. If it is much lighter, work out the price per gram, and the bargain usually disappears.

No bar needed for this one.
I have stood in the rooms in Wakayama where kakishibu is made. The persimmons are harvested once a year, pressed unripe, then ferment for months. It is not a cheap input, and there is only so much of it each year.
Now picture two bars for ten dollars, in stock all year, in unlimited quantity.
Something has to give, and it is always the persimmon. It gets swapped for a splash of juice, orange dye and a fragrance oil that smells the way people expect persimmon to smell.
If the price seems impossible for a fermented, harvest-limited ingredient, that is because it is. You are not being offered a bargain on the same thing. You are being offered a different thing.

Not the ten dollars.
It costs you three months, and the belief that anything works.
You use it faithfully. Nothing changes, because a trace of juice was never going to change anything. Around week four you stop, and file persimmon soap next to the deodorants and body washes that did not work either.
Then you go back to checking yourself before you hug anyone.
That is the real damage. I would genuinely rather you ran these checks on someone else's bar and it passed, than have you write the whole idea off because of a bar that was never really persimmon soap.

People ask why we are not on the marketplaces. Next to forty near-identical orange bars, the only thing anyone can compare is price. We would lose that fight on purpose, because our ingredients cost what they cost.
So the arrangement is simple. One store, and these are the terms:

You cannot audit your own smell. Your nose adapts to you, so you are the last person in the room who can tell. That is also why it is so easy to sell a useless bar into this category.
So give it two weeks, then ask someone who will tell you the truth. A daughter, a husband, a sister. They will know before you do. Mine did, and she never said a word.
And whatever you decide about us, before you buy persimmon soap from anyone, run check number three. Take the bar out of the box. If it does not say SAWUMI on the bar, it is not the real one.
