The story

I made this soap for my grandmother.

She spent her last years in a care home. The staff were wonderful and she was washed every day. But she still had that smell, the one everyone who has visited a care home knows. And she knew it too.

She became self-conscious. She would pull back when we went to hug her. She stopped wanting visitors in her room. It broke my heart, because it had nothing to do with how well she was looked after.

So I went looking for an answer, and found it in Japan. I made a soap with it for her. She started using it, and the smell went. Then the residents around her started asking for it. Then their families did.

That soap became SAWUMI.

Fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu), used in Japan for generations, binds nonenal so it rinses off instead of being covered up.
